After a mixed year with more lows than highs, Borussia Dortmund is hoping for a healthy Sébastien Haller to start after the World Cup break. The striker made his comeback from cancer in January.

Borussia Dortmund has once again had a complicated half-year. In addition to sporting setbacks, newcomer Sébastien Haller’s personal stroke of fate accompanied BVB in the second half of the year. The striker was diagnosed with a testicular tumor in July.

It’s going internationally, less so in the league

The first 15 games of the season also had a lot to offer BVB in terms of sport. After two wins at the start, Dortmund experienced a memorable home game against newly promoted Werder Bremen. After a 2:0 lead, BVB gambled away the win in the last few minutes and lost 2:3. “I have no idea what happened,” said captain Marco Reus after the game.

And despite the success in the district derby and a draw against Bayern Munich, BVB didn’t really find their way. Defeats against 1. FC Köln and Union Berlin meanwhile threw Dortmund back to eighth place in the table. An outstanding Jew Bellingham then led Borussia Dortmund to a 5-0 home win against VfB Stuttgart at the end of October. This was followed by victories against Frankfurt and Bochum. Shortly before the long break, BVB suffered the next setbacks with defeats against Wolfsburg and Mönchengladbach.

In the Champions League, on the other hand, things went much better for Borussia Dortmund. After beating FC Copenhagen 3-0, BVB suffered a 2-1 defeat at Manchester City after a late goal by Erling Haaland, who had migrated away. The 1:2 was the only defeat in the group phase for Borussia. With a 4-1 win over FC Sevilla and three draws, Dortmund sealed the sovereign entry into the round of 16. And in the DFB Cup, after victories against TSV 1860 Munich (3-0) and Hannover 96 (2-0), the round of 16 awaits (on February 8 against VfL Bochum).

Haller makes a comeback, uncertain future with Reus and Moukoko

Although Sébastien Haller came to Dortmund in the summer, the Frenchman will probably not make his competitive debut until the end of January. The diagnosis of a testicular tumor forced Haller to take a five-month break.

It was the big shock in BVB’s summer preparations. Haller was signed by Ajax Amsterdam in early July to replace superstar Erling Haaland, who had migrated to Manchester City. Two weeks later, Haller was diagnosed with a testicular tumor. After 177 days and several surgeries, the 28-year-old made his comeback in the friendly against Fortuna Düsseldorf in January. “It was a great moment for me. I felt a lot of support,” said Haller after his return. “We hope that the body doesn’t show any negative reactions, that we can build on that and increase the workload in the next few games,” said Edin Terzic.

Sports director Sebastian Kehl signed Anthony Modeste in the summer to replace the replacement. The striker scored 23 competitive goals at league rivals 1. FC Köln last season. So far, Modeste has not found his way into the game system at BVB. After the first games of the season in the starting eleven, the 34-year-old had to make way for the 18-year-old national player Youssoufa Moukoko in the last few games before the break. Only with his goal to make it 2-2 against Bayern in the final minute did Modeste become a Dortmund hero for a brief moment.

Sébastien Haller could remain the only “winter signing”. All players are fit, should no top performer get injured, Kehl will probably forego short-term reinforcements. In all likelihood, BVB will not lose players in winter either. The future of Bellingham, Reus and Moukoko seems uncertain. The former is being courted by numerous top clubs, Reus and Moukoko only have a contract until the summer. In all three cases, however, a departure this winter is not to be expected.

BVB captain Reus still dodges future question Pfeil rechts Terzic has to prove himself

Edin Terzic has two turbulent years behind him. As a celebrated interim coach and cup hero, the 40-year-old had to make way for Marco Rose in the summer of 2021 and took over the post of technical director for a year. After separating from Rose in May 2022, Terzic was allowed to work for the second time. But this time it is not an interim solution.

However, there is not much left of the euphoria from the second half of the 2020/21 season. In the time after Jürgen Klopp, the current tenure of the native Mendener is one of the weaker ones at BVB. Dortmund has scored an average of 1.74 points in the 23 competitive games so far, four of the six previous Klopp successors had a better result – including Terzic himself in the period from December 2020 to June 2021 (2.0 points). And also Rose, who was only allowed to stay a year despite the average of 1.85 points.

“We don’t need to badmouth him. He’s doing a great job and we’re 1000 percent convinced of him,” said Hans-Joachim Watzke in defense of his coach. Edin Terzic himself defends the latest achievements and the associated results: “Something that has developed over years and gone in a negative direction cannot, in my opinion, be changed with words within a few weeks or months.”

For the new year, Terzic has been assigned an experienced man. Armin Reutershahn replaces Peter Hermann as assistant coach. Hermann left BVB at the beginning of December for health reasons. The 62-year-old Reutershahn was most recently active as Adi Hütter’s assistant coach at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Minimum goal Champions League qualification

After dropping out of the Champions League group stage last season, Terzic has at least led BVB to the knockout stage this year. Chelsea are waiting in the round of 16 (first leg on February 15). A progress against the 2021 title holder would be a great success for Terzic and BVB.

And a lot still seems possible in the league. Sixth in the table, BVB is five points behind SC Freiburg, who came in second by surprise. The gap to Bayern is another four points. “We have to catch up from behind from day one, from the first game. There are no excuses,” demands Marco Reus.
