Winger Soichiro Kozuki should liven up the recently harmless attacking game of FC Schalke, who were threatened with relegation.

As announced by the bottom of the Bundesliga table, the 22-year-old Japanese player from his own U23 team will receive a contract until 2025 with an option for another season. Kozuki drew attention to himself with a strong first half of the season in the Schalke regional league team and recently also impressed as a goalscorer in the three professional games before the Christmas break.

“Soichiro is strong in one-on-one combat, has a high level of dynamism and also has good speed. He undoubtedly has great talent, but is still at the beginning of his career,” said coach Thomas Reis. “Even if there are already one or two comparisons with big Japanese players, we want to keep the pressure off him as much as possible and build it up carefully so that we can still have a lot of fun with him in the future.”

Kozuki scored eight goals and provided five assists in 14 league games for the U23s. “In previous test matches and training sessions, Soichiro has not only indicated his potential because of his goals. Now it’s up to him to continue on the path he has taken – we will support him as best we can,” commented sporting director Peter Knäbel.
