Bundesliga: Union Berlin bestraft Bremens Unsicherheit und jagt Bayern

Status: 01/25/2023 10:28 p.m

Werder Bremen showed too many uncertainties against 1. FC Union Berlin in the Bundesliga. The patient Berliners turned the game with well-known virtues. And are now Bayern’s first pursuer.

On Wednesday (January 25th, 2023) Union beat Bremen 2-1 (1-1). After Amos Pieper (14′) put Werder in front, Janik Haberer (18′) and Kevin Behrens (46′) turned the game around. Coach Urs Fischer’s team has moved up to second place and is only three points behind leaders Bayern Munich (36 points), while Bremen slips further into the gray middle of the table.

It was a tough start. Werder refrained from running high and were more concerned with safety after coach Ole Werner’s team had recently been overrun at 1. FC Köln (1:7). A standard situation really got the game going. Marvin Ducksch took the free kick. And found Pieper with his sharp cross, who let the ball slide over the crown and took the lead early on with Bremen’s first chance.

It was the defender’s first goal for Bremen. But that was followed by a low blow: just four minutes later, Pieper’s back pass to goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka fell short, and the keeper’s positional play wasn’t entirely to blame either. Behrens, who, somewhat surprisingly, was allowed to play in his hometown in the Union storm from the start, then checked Pavlenka, who parried. But Haberer used the rebound.

Union defends short Bremen pressure phase

This was followed by a short pressure phase in Bremen. Niclas Füllkrug got through to Leonardo Bittencourt, whose shot was deflected to the post by Robin Knoche (21′).

However, Union then struggled. And continued to force Bremen errors. Pavlenka also seemed unsure: First, an intercepted corner kick slipped out of his hands, shortly afterwards he made the next mistake. Behrens blocked a Pavlenka pass, the ball came to Sheraldo Becker, who sank it in the corner (42′). Because of a handball from Behrens in the block, the goal was not given after VAR use. So it went with the draw in the dressing room.

Bremen boy Behrens shocked Werder after a break

However, there was a blow to the neck for Werder after the restart. Less than ten seconds were played when Union got a corner kick. Union winter signing Josip Juranovic found Behrens on the second post, who turned the game around with his head. It was the eleventh Union header of the season: best in the league.

From this comfortable situation, Union limited itself to defending and lurking for counterattacks. Bremen was challenged in terms of game design, played with commitment, but did not reward themselves. Füllkrug missed a good chance (53rd).

Union Berlin calmly plays to its own strengths

It was a chaotic game, which suited the “iron” quite well, who destroyed creative approaches in the Werder game at the latest in their own defensive third. The Fischer team, which ultimately ran more than four kilometers more than Bremen, repeatedly set offensive accents themselves and recorded more shots on goal than Bremen. The decision left Union alone, but brought the lead in a concentrated manner over time.

Union demanded in the Berlin derby against Hertha

On the 18th matchday of the Bundesliga, Union has to play away for the Berlin city derby at the troubled Hertha (Saturday, 3.30 p.m.). At the same time, Bremen welcomes the in-form VfL Wolfsburg.
