Bundesliga club 1. FC Union Berlin is counting on captain and veteran Christopher Trimmel for at least one more season.

The Iron announced the extension of the contract with the 35-year-old defender. The personal details were made official at the training camp in Campoamor, Spain, at exactly 10.28 a.m. – an allusion to ten years of club membership and the shirt number 28 of the Austrian international.

Trimmel switched from Rapid Vienna to Union in 2014 and had taken part in the sporting upswing from the lowlands of the 2nd division to temporarily leading the Bundesliga this season and making it into the European Cup. He has been the captain of the Köpenicker since 2018.

“The last few years have been incredibly emotional and formative for the club, but also for me personally. I am very happy that I can continue to experience and help shape everything,” said Trimmel about his contract extension. Trimmel has played 286 competitive games for Union so far. 20 were added this season. “Christopher has known the club for many years and is an absolute identification figure for players and fans. His sporting achievements speak for themselves and we are happy to have found a good basis for his further Union future with him,” said Union Managing Director Oliver Ruhnert.
