The professionals from 1. FC Union Berlin started their training camp in Campoamor, Spain, with a first easy session on the training ground.

The Köpenickers had arrived on the Costa Blanca in the west of the country with 29 players. Norway international Morten Thorsby was not there. The 26-year-old will undergo surgery this week and will only rejoin the team after the training camp, the club said.

With temperatures around 17 degrees, the recently injured midfielder András Schäfer trained individually again. The three youth players Yannic Stein, Mathis Bruns and Aljoscha Kemlein traveled to Spain. Around two dozen fans watched the training. Two training sessions are scheduled for Tuesday.

The fifth-placed player in the Bundesliga will be in Campoamor until January 11th. Union also held its last winter training camp in the Alicante region in January 2020.

Two friendlies are planned on the hotel grounds. On January 7th, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., two different formations will be tested against league rivals FC Augsburg. On January 21, Union will start again with the 16th Bundesliga matchday. Coach Urs Fischer’s team welcomes TSG 1899 Hoffenheim to the An der Alten Försterei stadium (3:30 p.m. / Sky).
