Bundesliga-Winterpause: Siegesserie von Union Berlin verleitet nicht zur Euphorie
Union Berlin came through the pre-winter test matches flawlessly. However, coach Fischer still sees room for improvement.
The preparatory phase was completed optimally with six wins in six friendlies – but before the Bundesliga resumes, the euphoria at 1. FC Union is still limited.
“We’ll know where we stand after the game against Hoffenheim. I have the feeling that something is still missing,” said Union coach Urs Fischer before the home game of the 16th matchday against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim next Saturday (3:30 p.m./ Sky), “Results in preparation can also be deceptive. Of course it’s good if you win. Then you take a certain amount of confidence with you.”
Fischer: “Not yet consistent enough”
With a 3-1 win, the Berliners concluded the friendly series before preparing for the restart after the long winter break on Tuesday. However, coach Urs Fischer was not really satisfied. “I didn’t like the first half defensively. That wasn’t consistent enough. We allowed way too much. That wasn’t good,” said the Swiss. The goals for the Köpenicker scored in front of 3618 visitors midfielder Genki Haraguchi with a header (24th), defender Danilho Doekhi (43rd) and attacker Kevin Behrens (80th). In the 27th minute, Zilina equalized 1-1 in the meantime thanks to a converted penalty kick from Timotej Jambor.
However, the results of the last test were quite clear, as two regular players, six-pointer Rani Khedira and striker Sheraldo Becker, had to pass due to illness. The offensive players Sven Michel and Jamie Leweling also caught the flu after returning from Spain. “I hope they can start training again on Tuesday,” said Fischer about his hospital.
In addition, midfielder Paul Seguin had to sit out due to muscular problems. According to Fischer, he should at least be able to compete in substitute training again this Sunday. Midfield players Andras Schäfer (training after a metatarsal fracture) and Morten Thorsby (after stomach surgery) were also absent.
Newcomer Roussillon not yet there
Defender Jerome Roussillon, who was signed by VfL Wolfsburg on Thursday, is not an option for the time being. The knee problems brought with them do not currently allow full team training. The Frenchman trained individually on Saturday and occasionally watched his new colleagues from the stands during the friendly against Zilina.
In addition, Fischer has to change the defense against Hoffenheim. Diogo Leite is suspended after his red card in the game at SC Freiburg (1:4). On Saturday, Fischer therefore let Timo Baumgartl play 45 minutes in the 3-5-2 system on the left central defender and Paul Jaeckel on the right central defender. Danilho Doekhi changed sides at the break. One of this trio will initially be on the bench against Hoffenheim.
