DFB-Kapitänin: Alexandra Popp wundert sich über Auszeichnung
DFB captain Alexandra Popp reacted with surprise to the “kicker” award “Personality of the Year”.
“When I heard that I was voted Personality of the Year, I asked myself: What have I done? I played football and actually I was just myself,” said the national soccer striker and runner-up from the European Championship VfL Wolfsburg.
“It has always been important to me that I keep my down-to-earth attitude. A lot of people appreciate that about me,” emphasized Popp. “But it’s also important to me to stay true to myself. I don’t want to pretend, I want to remain authentic.” Perhaps this was part of the success of the DFB selection at the European Championships in July, “because we were authentic as a team and were able to draw many people under our spell”.
The “Kicker” has been honoring people from football in this way since 1990. The first was Franz Beckenbauer as a coach after winning the World Cup title in Rome, and Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski was most recently honored in 2021. “It was a very special year for Poppi: She trembled for a long time about being able to take part in the European Championships in England and then delivered a great tournament with her six goals and great performances,” said national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg. “But for me she also represents everything that happened in women’s football in 2022 and what a great development it has taken.”
