Ehemaliger Interims-Generalsekretär: FIFA-Kündigung aufgehoben: Kattner darf auf Millionenabfindung hoffen
The termination without notice of the former interim general secretary Markus Kattner by the world football association FIFA almost seven years ago was illegal.
As only became known on Tuesday (17.01.23), the Supreme Court of the Swiss canton of Zurich last October upheld the Bayreuther’s appeal against the first-instance confirmation of his expulsion by the labor court at FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich.
“The dismissal without notice was considered unjustified,” a spokesman for the cantonal court told the French news agency AFP.
Compensation of almost ten million euros demanded
The highest instance referred the procedure to clarify Kattner’s claim for damages back to the labor court. The 52-year-old, who has worked at FIFA since 2003 for more than ten years as finance director and also as deputy general secretary and most recently the highest-ranking FIFA employee on an interim basis, is demanding compensation equivalent to almost ten million euros.
Kattner was promoted to head of the FIFA administration in September 2015 in the wake of the upheavals caused by the corruption scandal at the world association and the resignation of the then General Secretary Jerome Valcke (France). Nine months later, the Franconian was dismissed without notice by the FIFA management around President Gianni Infantino (Switzerland), who had just been elected to the top of the association under controversial circumstances. The organization cited the result of an internal investigation as justification, which had proven that Kattner had failed to fulfill his financial obligations.
