Against Eintracht Frankfurt, FC Schalke 04 didn’t play like bottom of the table in the Bundesliga and still lost, again. After the 3-0 (1-0) win on Saturday (01/21/2023) and goals by Jesper Lindström (21st minute), Raffael Borré (84th) and Aurélio Buta (90th + 1) Eintracht is now the first Bayern pursuers.

Henning Matriciani looked puzzled, then he stumbled. In the match between FC Schalke and Eintracht Frankfurt on match day 16, the 21st minute was ticking when Frankfurt’s Jesper Lindstrom picked up the pace, indicated a step-over and Matriciani lost his balance. Things were not going well for Schalke at that moment, and the falling Matriciani must have guessed that.

Frankfurt’s Lindstrom, 22, is one of this season’s discoveries. He’s fast, very fast, and he’s good at one-on-ones. He can also finish, this time he shot into the far corner. It was Lindstrom’s seventh goal of the season and Eintracht’s opening goal.

Lindstrom, Matriciani and the subtle difference

And it was also the scene of the game. It showed the subtle differences between Frankfurt and Schalke and between Lindström and Matriciani.

Of course, the jubilant Lindstrom stood for Eintracht, who after their ninth win in their 16th Bundesliga game have 30 points, in second place behind Bayern. In a Frankfurt team that is constantly developing, Lindstrom stands for further development.

On the other hand, the falling Matriciani, 22, was a symbol for a Schalke team that rarely played bottom of the table and still lost. Schalke have defended worse than Matriciani, but in the decisive moments Lindström’s Frankfurters were just a step faster. Or two.

And so Schalke is still waiting for their third win of the season after the 16th matchday of the Bundesliga. Already eleven defeats, but only nine points, 18th place. These are not easy times for everyone who is with FC Schalke.

Schalke only hit the post, but not the goal

There were a few moments against Frankfurt that could give Schalkern hope. About the three minutes in the first half in which Schalke hit the woodwork twice, but not in the goal: First, Simon Terodde headed after a pass from Danny Latza, but Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp deflected the ball with his fingertips to the outside of the post (29th). Then Soichiro Kozuki shot from a tight angle, also hitting the post (32′).

In the summer, Schalke had signed the Japanese Kozuki, 22, from the regional league club 1. FC Düren, he was planned for the reserve team. Because he scored eight goals in 14 games there and provided five assists, he was allowed to go to the training camp with coach Thomas Reis’ Bundesliga team in the winter and also impressed there. Kozuki is quick, he likes to dribble and he’s not afraid to take risks. Players like him are rare at FC Schalke.

You saw that against Frankfurt too. Of course, hit the post, but Kuzuki’s Bundesliga debut wasn’t a bad one either. Once, in the 47th minute, he headed hard at goal, but Trapp pulled his arm up just in time. Kozuki did not score a goal either, Schalke’s defeat remained. Especially since Frankfurt met twice more.

First Borré meets, then Buta – Frankfurt makes the decision

Frankfurt’s joker Rafael Borré first cheered, he of all people. The Colombian was a regular player last season, but now he’s often just a joker and not always satisfied. Against Schalke he scored only for the second time this season, the template came from Lindstrom.

Aurélio Buta scored his first goal for Frankfurt. The Portuguese switched to Eintracht in the summer, he was injured for a long time, and he played in the Bundesliga for the first time against Schalke. And then a goal, not bad for a right-back.

Schalke at home against Leipzig

Newly promoted Schalke will welcome RB Leipzig on Matchday 17 on Tuesday evening (24.01.2023 at 6.30 p.m.). A day later, Frankfurt is challenged away to Freiburg (8:30 p.m.).
