5-0 after just 36 minutes: 1. FC Köln showed Werder Bremen the limits in the Bundesliga. In the end, FC won 7-1 (5-1) on Saturday evening (January 21, 2023). Man of the evening was Cologne’s Steffen Tigges, he was involved in four goals.

When Tigges was substituted after just under an hour, the fans of 1. FC Köln gave him applause. Tigges scored two goals against Werder Bremen (15th minute, 21st minute), once from 46.7 meters. He prepared the goals of Ellyes Skhiri (30th) and Denis Husainbasic (36th).

Not a bad performance for someone who wasn’t exactly expected to be in the starting XI after Davie Selke’s transfer.

Highest Cologne victory for almost 40 years

The strong Linton Maina (9th), Skhiri again (54th) and Bremen’s Marco Friedl scored for Cologne with an own goal (76th). Once the Bremen team were allowed to cheer, but they did so with restraint. In fact, only goal scorer Niclas Füllkrug celebrated when he made it 5-1 (38′).

For FC it was the first success since mid-October. FC had last won more in October 1983 against Eintracht Frankfurt (7-0). In the table, Cologne is tenth with 20 points, Bremen is ninth and has one point more.

The early lead resulted from a completely unsuccessful free-kick variant by Bremen’s Marvin Ducksch and Anthony Jung, before 17 seconds later Maina completed the counterattack that had already been played twice. For the 23-year-old, who came from Hanover in the summer, it was the second goal in his 24th competitive game for Cologne, the first at home.

Bremen’s wise man makes a mistake, Cologne’s Tigges hits

And Cologne quickly followed suit: Ex-Bremer Florian Kainz, who had extended his contract during the week until 2025, conquered the ball after Duksch’s capital bad pass. Tigges completed the ball from ten meters with his left. Six minutes later, the striker scored from a greater distance than any other Bundesliga player this season – and again he benefited from a complete absence from Bremen.

Mitchell Weiser sent his goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka into trouble with a back pass, the Czech saved the ball but put it in the middle of Tigges’ foot. The 24-year-old took the ball over the halfway line and shot it into the empty goal.

Skhiri can also do side kicks

The Cologne team continued to act like they were in a rush: After Maina slipped, the ball flew through the entire penalty area and Skhiri pushed in from behind. Huseinbašic scored after Tigges had put it down before Werder showed a minimal sign of rebellion with a header from Füllkrug. The Bremen fans sang ironically: “Away win, away win!”

It didn’t come to that, it wasn’t a surprise anymore. Instead, the visiting fans saw two more goals from Cologne, one of which was Friedl’s own goal and one a side kick by Skhiri, who hadn’t been known for such tricks before.

Cologne has to be the record champion

1. FC Köln will be fighting for points against FC Bayern on Matchday 17 in Munich (Tuesday, January 24th, 2023 at 8:30 p.m.). Bremen receives Union Berlin a day later (8.30 p.m.).
