Fußball-Bundesliga-Teamcheck: Kann der SV Werder Bremen an die starken Leistungen anknüpfen?
After the rise, Bremen also played big in the upper house. But the speculation about Niclas Füllkrug does not stop before the Bundesliga restart.
Wolfsburg coach Niko Kovac did it, as did Gladbach coach Daniel Farke and Hoffenheim’s André Breitenreiter. They all emphasized before their teams’ duels with Werder that Bremen were “not a typical climber”. Despite the tight cash register, despite the unchanged game concept for the 2nd league, despite green and white understatements. But Bremen’s plan to also trust in the recipe for success of the promotion season in the upper house worked. Even more: Despite the outsider role, Werder not only established themselves in the middle of the league, but also set one or the other scent mark.
Werder madness against Dortmund and Gladbach
The 3-2 win in Dortmund on matchday three already has a firm place in the club’s history: up to the 88th minute, Werder were trailing 0-2 and looked like they were sure to lose. But then the jokers Lee Buchanan and Niklas Schmidt equalized before Oliver Burke, who also came on as a substitute, turned the game around in front of the BVB south stand. Three goals in six minutes – a Werder madness that meant the latest comeback in Bundesliga history.

The clear 5-1 home win against Mönchengladbach also caused a sensation throughout the league. At half-time, Bremen were already 4-0 ahead and were in a frenzy. In the last few games, the north Germans went out of breath with only two wins and four defeats and the cup loss at second division Paderborn. But the 1:6 swatter against Bayern Munich, in which courageous Werderans learned a lot, did not dampen the good mood. No wonder, as Bremen are in a comfortable ninth place in the table before the Bundesliga restart.
Speculations about Werder striker Niclas Füllkrug
The transfer phase so far has been mostly quiet on the Weser, at least on paper. In any case, there are no new faces. It is unlikely that the club will make another commitment, despite the rather thin staffing level. Also because Bremen sees no need for newcomers. “Above all, the way we play football has shown that we have a good and balanced squad,” said sports director Frank Baumann in Sportblitz. On the side of departures there are two players with Nicolai Rapp (seven short appearances/to Kaiserslautern) and Benjamin Goller (without a competitive minute/Nuremberg). Neither had been able to assert themselves in Bremen and are now trying their luck in the 2nd division.
Does he stay or does he go? Werder striker Niclas Füllkrug has had a strong World Cup.
On the other hand, speculation about the future of world championship driver Niclas Füllkrug caused unrest in Bremen, which was otherwise so relaxed. The fact that the top scorer (ten Bundesliga goals) has recently changed his consulting agency should have caused some Werder fans to gasp. Especially since a transfer would be lucrative from the point of view of both the player and the club: Although the sporting loss would be enormous, the cash-strapped Bremen team would certainly bring in a high sum of millions if the 29-year-old were sold. In turn, Füllkrug proved that he can do more than just keep up at a high level. A move to a top club would probably give him his last chance to play internationally at club level.

Despite the open ending, both sides seem relaxed to the outside world. “I’m just happy to be here and I believe that I still have a lot of opportunities to develop at Werder,” said Füllkrug. Werder’s sporting director Clemens Fritz, on the other hand, emphasized: “We are currently relaxed.” At the moment it seems that the parties will continue their cooperation. It is quite possible, however, that after the season there will be new movement in the filling jug cause.
Is Ole Werner shaping a new Werder era?
A filling jug whereabouts would definitely also be in the sense of Werder coach Ole Werner. The 34-year-old coached Bremen in the 3-5-2 system for promotion and is also relying on his proven formation in the upper house. Werner rarely makes personnel changes in the first eleven. Also because the success remained despite the stronger opponents. “If there is a ball loss on the middle line in the second division, it is 50 to 50 that there will be a chance to score. In the Bundesliga it is a 100 percent chance to score,” Werner summed up in Sportblitz after his first year at Werder.

With his down-to-earth demeanor and his penchant for attractive, but also profitable football, Werner an der Weser has awakened plenty of memories of green and white times of success. Some Bremen residents even believe he is capable of shaping a similar era to that of Otto Rehhagel or Thomas Schaaf. In short: Werner and Werder seem to have searched and found each other. Unsurprisingly, the club has already publicly announced that it wants to retain the 34-year-old in the long term. And Werner also feels comfortable on the Weser: “I had a great feeling from the first moment.”

With 21 points from 15 games, Bremen are currently very close to the upper third of the league. So instead of getting stuck in the fight to stay up, Werder is fighting for the international places – if only with a view to the table. While the fans should be dreaming, players, coaches and officials remain humble. And with good reason: “The last one or two years in particular have shown that we have done really well with humility and a down-to-earth attitude,” said Füllkrug.
Werder celebrated a 1-0 win at Schalke 04 in the last friendly before the Bundesliga restarted.
The Bremen team used the long World Cup break for a training camp in Murcia, Spain, and a few friendly matches (2-0 win against third-division side Real Murcia and 2-2 draw against Swiss first-division side FC St. Gallen). Werder narrowly won the dress rehearsal against weakened Schalke 1-0. In terms of play, however, the green-whites were only partially convincing in the test kicks. In short: There is still room for improvement for Werner and his protégés.

But if Bremen confirm their performances so far in the new year, the relegation battle should increase without Werder participation. If the green-whites continue to score regularly, there may be a single-digit place in the table. For a climber that would already be a huge success and to hope for more would be almost presumptuous. But as is well known throughout the league, Bremen are a lot, but certainly not a typical climber.
