Fußball: Re-Start in der 3. Liga – das Saarland hofft
After a nine-week break, the 3rd division starts the rest of the season with the 18th matchday. Hopes are high, especially in Saarland.
Because before the World Cup break, the 3rd division was firmly in Saarland hands. SV Elversberg leads the table with 41 points. The team has won 13 games in 17 games and scored 42 goals – and all of that as a promoted team. The lead over the second in the table is already a whopping eight points – and that’s called 1. FC Saarbrücken. It is clear that both clubs are looking forward to the restart. Because FCS also remained unbeaten for five games in a row under new coach Rüdiger Ziehl.
Things are getting tight behind the duo from Saarland. Also in the promotion race are SV Wehen Wiesbaden, FC Ingolstadt and SC Freiburg II (all 31), TSV 1860 Munich (30), Viktoria Cologne (27) and SV Waldhof Mannheim (26).
The relegation zone begins in 14th place, where Borussia Dortmund II ranks with 18 points. Hallesche FC, VfB Oldenburg and FSV Zwickau on the first relegation zone have scored 16 points, followed by Erzgebirge Aue (14) and SV Meppen as well as SpVgg Bayreuth (13 each).
Start for Elversberg has it all
A top game is imminent for Elversberg. On Saturday (01/14/2023) the team has to play third-placed Wehen Wiesbaden. A week later it’s against the fourth from Ingolstadt.
“I hope that the boys will find their way after the break,” says Elversberg’s coach Horst Steffen. He doesn’t want to know anything about the rise. “It’s remarkable that we’re top of the table. The topic of the 2nd league is brought up again and again. But not from my side,” explained the 53-year-old successful coach.

It starts in the 3rd division on Friday (01/13/2022) but first with a basement duel. Zwickau expects Oldenburg and can catapult the North Germans to a relegation zone.
Saarland derby in early February
The team is definitely a candidate simply because of its dominant style of play. Elversberg has the top scorer in the league in Luca Schnellbacher (nine goals), while Jannik Rochelt is fourth in the rankings with seven goals. The team has long since wrapped up the autumn championship.
The SV only suffered two defeats, one of them at home against Saarbrücken. On February 4th, the Saarland derby will take place again in the state capital. “As long as we’re there, I wouldn’t mind a Saarland double promotion,” said Steffen.
Little going on in the transfer market
Little happened on the transfer market in winter. However, Elversberg managed to lure defender Nico Antonitsch from FC Ingolstadt to Saarland and thus weaken a direct competitor. Transfer fee: 200,000 euros. Borussia Dortmund II also used the competition. Center forward Cyrill Akono came from Verl for 150,000 euros. Aue took defender Kilian Jabob from the second division club Karlsruher SC. Luca Bolay (also from KSC) is now playing for Waldhof Mannheim, and Viktoria Köln brought attacking man Mike Wunderlich back from 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
ARD continues to report live
Fans are again well looked after by ARD. In the third programs there are at least two games to be seen live on almost every matchday. They will then also be broadcast live on sportschau.de. BR, HR, MDR, NDR, RBB, SR, SWR and WDR show a total of 86 games free of charge on free TV. The sports show shows summaries of selected games on Saturdays, which are then also offered on demand.
SWR and BR will show the duel between Waldhof Mannheim and TSV 1860 Munich on Saturday (13.01.2022), NDR will broadcast the game between VfL Osnabrück and Viktoria Köln, and MDR will show the game between Rot-Weiss Essen and the Halleschen FC to see. Kick-off is at 2 p.m. each day.
