German football is in hibernation after the World Cup. But other leagues start much earlier – the Premier League, for example, traditionally at Christmas. An overview.

After the World Cup final in Qatar, German football goes into hibernation. Bundesliga fans have to wait more than a month until RB Leipzig and FC Bayern meet on January 20th. Elsewhere, however, some leagues have already started playing again.

The ball has been rolling again in the Scottish Premier League since last Thursday. Cup winners Glasgow Rangers beat Hibernian FC 3-2. World Cup host Qatar wants to draw attention to football, and the Qatar Stars League will kick off again on Tuesday. In order to optimally prepare the national team, this was suspended since mid-September.

On the same day, the first cup competitions in Spain, England and Turkey herald the start of operations for numerous first division clubs. A highlight: On Thursday Manchester City meets Jürgen Klopp and Liverpool FC. The first Belgian, Turkish and Portuguese leagues end their World Cup break on Friday.

On Boxing Day, the Premier League presents its fans with the traditional Boxing Day. Probably the most explosive encounter takes place between the London clubs Crystal Palace and FC Fulham. The top clubs FC Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City play on the following days.

The French Ligue 1 starts on December 28th. With the duel between Paris Saint-Germain and relegation candidates Racing Strasbourg there is also a candidate for many goals – PSG have already scored 43 goals after 15 games. On December 29th, Spain’s elite class will also be playing again. League leaders FC Barcelona meet Espanyol in the city derby on New Year’s Eve.

The Italian series starts again on January 4th, the Dutch Eredivisie on January 6th. If you want to follow German professional football, you have to be patient even longer. On January 20, the Bundesliga returns with a bang when RB Leipzig welcome FC Bayern Munich. The 2nd Bundesliga is taking a longer break and will not end its winter break until January 27th. At that point, the first Scottish league had already completed six matchdays. The 3rd league is earlier: On January 13th, FSV Zwickau welcomes VfB Oldenburg.
