As of: 01/17/2023 9:59 p.m

The British chemical group Ineos has announced that it will bid on the purchase of Manchester United. Ineos boss Jim Ratcliffe had previously gone empty-handed when selling Chelsea.

Ineos confirmed to the Reuters news agency and the Times newspaper that the company would officially enter the bidding process. The club has been owned by the American Glazer family since 2005, who have been criticized in the club’s fan scene for years. On November 22, 2022, the Glazers said they were exploring “strategic alternatives,” including a sale.

Manchester United is considered one of the most valuable sports brands in the world. According to media reports, the Glazers are hoping for a purchase price of around five billion British pounds. Malcolm Glazer’s father, who died in 2014, paid a total of 790 million pounds for the takeover of Manchester United in 2005.

Ratcliffe already bought OGC Nice but arrived too late at Chelsea

Billionaire Ratcliffe is considered one of the richest people in Britain. He is very active in sports. In football, he already controls FC Lausanne in Switzerland and OGC Nice in France via Ineos. When Chelsea FC was up for sale in 2022, Ratcliffe also expressed interest but entered the bidding process too late. An investment group led by the American Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital bought the club. Ineos is also active in Formula 1, cycling and rugby.

Ratcliffe has faced criticism in Britain for supporting Britain’s exit from the EU while living in Monaco to save on taxes.

Manchester United in decline for years

Many Manchester United fans protest during games for a replacement of the Glazer family. United won their last championship in 2013 and the Champions League most recently in 2008. In recent years, the team has increasingly been part of the second-tier Europa League. In addition to the sporting decline, the protesting fans above all criticize the club’s increasing debt, which amounted to around 500 million pounds in 2022.

A potential buyer would have to shoulder other expenses in addition to the purchase price. Modernizations are needed at the stadium, new players are needed in the squad, and a new training ground has been under discussion for some time.
