Let’s travel together.

Messi vs. Ronaldo 2022 Head to Head

These two perennial rivals have been nominated for this year’s award, but who has outperformed the other in the last year?

GOAL50 is back, and we’re giving you, the readers, the opportunity to vote on the best male and female players in the world, as well as pay tribute to some special legends in our World Cup Wonders category.

Last year, over 23 million votes were cast to determine the winners, and this year, we’re asking our readers to decide who comes out on top in each category.

Each section has a total of 2,450 possible match-ups, and the players with the most victories will be crowned the winners for 2022.

As with last year’s . the clash between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, both of whom have made this year’s men’s shortlist, is one of the most eagerly anticipated head-to-head battles.

During their illustrious careers, the duo established themselves as two of the greatest players in the game’s history, and while they may both be past their prime, they’ve demonstrated over the last year that they still deserve to be considered among the world’s best.

Last year, Messi won the fifth time, tying him with Ronaldo for the most prestigious award.

Will either of them be contenders again next year?

Messi’s first season in France was not without challenges, but he ended the year as a French champion with Paris Saint-Germain, having played a key role in the club’s title victory under Mauricio Pochettino.

Messi had 14 assists in the league, second only to Kylian Mbappe, and he’s had an incredible start to the 22-23 season, having assisted on 17 goals in his first 12 league games.

Messi, now 35, isn’t the same player he was during his Barcelona heyday, but he’s still expected to be one of the stars of the upcoming World Cup, where the generational superstar will be desperate to win the game’s biggest prize.

This could be Messi’s final chance to emulate Diego Maradona and lead Argentina to victory, and who can bet against the veteran having one last dance in Qatar?

Ronaldo is heading to the World Cup after a much more difficult start to the season, having been in and out of a Manchester United team in transition under Erik ten Hag.

Nonetheless, he defied the critics last season by finishing the season with 18 Premier League goals (only two players scored more), proving that he can still do it in English football.

His devastating two-goal performance in Portugal’s 4-0 Nations League thrashing of Switzerland in June was perhaps a preview of what’s to come from Ronaldo in Qatar, and at 37, he, like Messi, knows it’s his last chance to secure a historic international triumph.

These two living legends can still settle matches and dominate headlines in their mid-30s, but who had a better 2022? That is entirely up to you…

The voting period runs from November 15 to December 18. It couldn’t be simpler, so vote now!
