Qatar set an unfavorable World Cup record after a 2-0 loss to Ecuador in the opening game.
Qatar has become the first host nation in the World Cup’s 92-year history to lose their first game.
Qatar will host the inaugural tournament.
Loss to Ecuador is the first defeat for the hosts.
WHAT OCCURED? Ecuador defeated Qatar 2-0 in the World Cup opener, thanks to two first-half goals from captain Enner Valencia. Ecuador’s captain had a goal disallowed for offside as well. As a result, Qatar becomes the first World Cup host nation to lose their first game.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: It’s obviously not the start Qatar would have wanted to make to a competition that has already been marred by controversy. Supporters also made their feelings about the game clear at halftime, abandoning the game in large numbers with the hosts already trailing 2-0. According to preliminary estimates, approximately 20,000 fans left the game at halftime.
WHAT DID YOU KNOW? There were only 11 shots in this game (five for Qatar and six for Ecuador) – no World Cup match has had fewer attempts (since 1966).
WHAT COMES NEXT FOR QATAR? The hosts will play Senegal again on Friday.
Who will win World Cup 2022?
Salute to Enner Valencia!
