SpeedSeries news | Carnage in Trans Am closer as Nathan Herne takes third win

Nathan Herne has walked away from Queensland Raceway with three wins in a row, dominating a wild close to round five of Turtle Wax Trans Am.

Herne skipped away from Repco Supercars Championship regular Brodie Kostecki in the weekend’s finale outing, winning by 1.4 seconds.

In doing so, the Garry Rogers Motorsport driver extended his series lead to 19 points over teammate Owen Kelly, who finished third in the final outing.

“It’s awesome,” said Herne.

“We knew coming to QR there would be a lot of Brisbane teams and a lot of blokes doing a lot of laps around here.

“We came up and did a two-day test day, thanks to GRM and Valvoline for putting that on for us. We learned a lot. Even in that race, I learned a lot.

“These beasts, they’re a different breed of car. Every time you go out there you learn something different.

“When you think you’ve finally mastered it, it gives you a kick up the backside and tells you you need to learn a bit more.

“I’ll go home, do some homework, come back to the next round and hopefully wrap up the championship.”

From pole position, Herne led into turn one. Behind him, chaos reigned as John Harris went into the back of Tim Brook, who spun around and collected Jackson Rice.

Rice nosedived the concrete wall on the approach to the turn while Brook ploughed through the gravel. Damage to his front bumper meant he only buried himself deeper.

Second place starter Jett Johnson got bundled out in the first lap melee, ceding positions to Brodie Kostecki and Owen Kelly.

Racing resumed on lap six with Herne at the head of the field. Moments before the restart, Harris finished himself off when he centre-punched another car and duly pulled into the pits with damage.

The closing laps were a relatively quiet affair. Herne skipped away from Kostecki who was left to fend off Kelly.

Johnson narrowly missed out on a podium but claimed second overall for the round ahead of Kostecki and behind Herne.

Turtle Wax Trans Am wraps up at the next SpeedSeries event at Sandown on September 16-18.
