Sportpolitik: UEFA entzieht russischem Kasan den europäischen Supercup

As of: 01/25/2023 6:41 p.m

The European Supercup will not take place in Kazan as planned at the beginning of the coming football season.

The European football union UEFA has stripped Russia of its role as host, instead the clash between the winners of the Champions League and Europa League will take place on August 16 at the stadium in Olympiacos Piraeus. That was decided by the Executive Committee of the Continental Confederation. Russian teams have been banned from UEFA and FIFA competitions since the end of February 2022 because of Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine.

On Tuesday there were talks between a delegation from the Russian association RFU and representatives of UEFA in Nyon. According to the Interfax news agency, the RFU reported that the main issue was the possible return of Russian teams to international competitions. The dialogue should therefore be continued. The next meeting was scheduled for February. UEFA did not comment on the meeting.

The British broadcaster Sky News reported on Tuesday that the exclusion should be maintained until the end of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. This ban could be lifted at European level by the UEFA Executive Committee.
